Over the last couple of years we have been hit by wave after wave of new burger joints in Leeds, with no respite showing yet as Five Guys is set to open soon on Duncan Street.
Thankfully, we’re been blessed with a new food revolution in the city with the newly opened Pieminister – right next door to the Five Guys site, in the former Oxfam building opposite the Corn Exchange. It’s a great location and is sure to follow in the success of one of its neighbours, with Reds True BBQ on the opposite corner. Call Lane clearly can’t accommodate any additional bars, but as an ever increasingly popular destination its promising to have some vibrant new modern restaurants choosing to set up their base nearby.
Pieminister started life in Bristol back in 2003 with their first store selling pie, mash and gravy.. this begs one question… what took you so long in bringing it to Leeds?!
The range of pies they serve is immense so you might struggle to choose one on your first visit. I was hugely disappointed that my dining companions all chose the same pie, the Moo & Blue (steak and blue cheese loveliness) while I went for the Fungi Chicken (chicken & mushroom) – all served on a bed of tasty fluffy mashed potato. My disappointment was due to wanting to try a range, although I think my friends realised this and counteracted my intentions by their restricted choices!
My pie was perfection, stuffed full of chunky chicken & mushrooms encased in a pie crust built to last. There wasn’t any of that flakiness that can barely hold a pie together, and their menu confirmed this is thanks to the suet pastry crust they use. I rounded off my pie choices with opting for the red wine & onion gravy.
They have a great range of tasty pies to choose from, with exactly the right sides to select from to make the perfect pie meal.
Give it a go, all that experience has created the perfect pie that won’t disappoint.
